While they lived in Manfred they rented the Martin Melby house in the Le Grande Addition. He received his (2 years of high school) education, then worked for the railroad as a section man for 18 years. Louie later worked for Midwest Motor, Jamestown College, Swingins Construction, Jamestown, and Thomas Motors, Pingree. He was married to Rose Fenner for 25 years. They divorced and he later married Ruth Densinger.

Their children Duane and Peggy attended Manfred School. Duane Thomas died in 2008 at his home under hospice care. Peggy and her husband Fred lived in West Fargo. Peggy passed away in 2015.
Louie died in 2008. Rose married Arlie Rud and they lived in Pingree, North Dakota. Rose passed away in 2015.
